Scenic Float and Fly Fishing Class

 

Guests will enjoy private access to the world famous Snake River while floating amongst wildlife and Teton views. Join us for our 7-mile lunch float along the Snake River that begins at the Wilson boat launch (west of Jackson) and floats downstream to our private riverside camp for a picnic lunch. Lunch includes roasted turkey & cheddar on locally- baked mini baguettes, Thai broccoli salad with peanut sauce, seasonal fruit salad, chips and home- baked cookies. Lemonade and water. Picnic tables and a restroom provided. Following lunch, Jackson Hole Fly Fishing School and some of the valley’s best fly fishing instructors will meet guests signed up for the JHFFS walk-wade fly fishing school. Students will receive top of the line fly fishing equipment from Orvis and Hatch as they enjoy personal instruction about the art and science of successful fly fishing.

This half-day trip allows families and corporate groups the convenience to experience two of Jackson Hole’s great summer past times in one memorable package.

Pricing: Adults 13 and older: $179, Children 12 and under: $149

Location: JHFFS and Barker-Ewing offer secluded private access to the world famous Snake River. The Snake River is designated a Blue Ribbon trout fishery that holds a healthy population of native cutthroat trout.

    Station 1. What to Cast
    Equipment handout: entomology kits
    What fish eat, entomology lessons and life cycles
    Insect identification, aquatic invertebrate sampling
    Matching the hatch and fly selection

    Station 2. How to Cast
    Equipment handout includes: Latest Orvis fly rods, premium Hatch reels, lines, leaders, wading boots and wading socks, Students must have sunglasses.
    Fun fundamentals of fly casting: The most important aspect of fly fishing is the cast and presentation of your fly to the fish. This portion of the class will familiarize students with the equipment used, the correct terminology, technique and mechanics of the fly cast.

    Station 3. Where to Cast
    Walk to river as a group: Safe wading techniques and stream etiquette discussed
    Trout need three things to survive: cover, food and cold clean water
    Understanding where trout live, seasonal movements and lifecycles
    Reading water and understanding fish behavior
    Different water environments: riffles, runs, tailouts, pools, seems, buckets, foam lines, etc.
    Water temperature and oxygen levels
    Observing clues: fish rising, food sources available, substrate structure

    Putting it all together and student fishing
    Students partner up in teams of 2 and each group gets a chance to cast a fly at a likely looking spot with professional instruction
    Prize for the most tangles and least amount of fish caught!

    Closing statements
    Fly fishing is about so much more then catching fish and it is truly used as a tool for watershed conservation and fishery protection.
